XM is the trackers music format. It has been developed in the 90s and stores both events and samples inside. Many good music has been created using Fast Tracker (xm is originally the Fast Tracker format). MIDI tracker can import events from XM modules to edit and get MIDI file in a result. (I have a version with complete support of XM files including samples, but it's still very alpha, so it's not available for download at the moment... It has also VST support... But very alpha, unfortunately).
